Van Zanten explores the intersection of nature and culture for universal forms that can capture feelings of
connection with these things. Her ceramics, paintings, and installations translate inner experiences about locations, people, objects, and associated stories from the past, present, and future.
She strives for her translations to give deeper meanings, whether consciously or unconsciously, to the
superficially visible. The arts from other cultures and times enrich the present. Making them visible and
incorporating them into the present creates a continuous interaction.
The power of a storm or the force of the water in a river is a theme that has inspired imagination for centuries. Or the silence of falling snowflakes. The sound of blackbirds, thrushes, and robins. The energy of unfolding flower buds. The branches of trees with their supple appearance. Van Zanten experiences symbolic meaning in the forms, just as art has had various symbols for centuries.
